“Pakistan: Nankana Sahib Islamists kill man accused of blasphemy,” OpIndia, February 11, 2023:
On Saturday (February 11), a man was beaten to death in broad daylight by a frenzied mob of Islamists in Nankana Sahib, Pakistan’s Punjab province.
According to reports, the unnamed victim was taken into police custody on charges of blasphemy. When the news spread, a large group of extremists besieged the Warburton police station.
They destroy property, capture the victim and beat him black and blue. After the brutal attack, the agitated mob set his body on fire. A video of the incident has now gone viral on social media.
In the video, the extremist crowd was seen surrounding the police station wall. Meanwhile, the local administration has sacked Station House Officer (SHO) Feroze Bhatt and Nankana Sahib Circle Deputy SP Nawaz Warak. A report has also been sought from the concerned officials in this regard.
Another video shared by journalist Mubashi Zaidi shows that small children with backpacks were also part of the lynch mob. Moreover, the visuals also revealed the extent of damage to police stations by Islamists.
In a tweet, the official handle of the Punjab Police said, “Notice of IG Punjab on the incident of killing of a citizen for allegedly desecrating the Quran by citizens in Nankana.”
“Direct senior officials to reach the spot and submit the investigation report. Strict departmental and legal action will be taken against those responsible for the incident and responsible for negligence and incompetence,” it added….
