“Mappa Lay Advisers support police, probation and prison services in setting up serious sex and violent offender management systems in the community. These arrangements, known as Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements or MAPPA, are required by section 325 of the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) 2003. Lay advisors contribute to MAPPA’s monitoring and evaluation and act as critical friends among challenging professionals.“
Hours: Successful candidates will normally commit up to 8 hours per month and will not be asked to commit more than 16 hours per month.

Department for Levelling-Up, Housing and Community – Planning Inspector – Non-Executive Board Member X3
The role of the Planning Inspectorate Board is to provide collective strategic leadership to the organisation. The Board is an advisory board and is responsible for ensuring that the Inspectorate meets the aims and objectives of the Strategic Plan, that our work reflects the priorities set by the Secretary of State and complies with requirements relating to the use of public funds. Non-Executive Directors are expected to attend meetings of the Board and Audit and Risk Assurance Committee (Committee) or Strategic Assurance Panel (Panel) once a month. Virtual meetings are held with plans to meet annually in Bristol.“
Timing: 2 days every month.

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs – Official Verderer of New Forests
“The current official Verder is about to end his term of office after 6 years and we are looking for a suitable replacement. Warders of the New Forest oversee the generalization and development of open forest with a statutory obligation to protect pasture, landscape, fauna and flora, and the Official Warder is responsible for leading their work. The official verderer is the chairman of the court and appointed by the king. Applicants for this unpaid position will have a track record of successful leadership backed up by knowledge of the countryside and particularly the New Forest.“
Time: Minimum 40 hours per month of time involved. You will devote sufficient time to help set direction for the Verderers organization and its work, help set meeting agendas, read papers, chair monthly meetings of the Verderers Court and represent Verderers in external forums and partnerships.

Ministry of Justice – Chairman of the National Council of Lay Observers
“This is an exciting opportunity to lead the lay watchdog, at a time when independent scrutiny is high on ministerial agendas. The Lay Observers role is to inspect situations where detainees are transported or held by escort and custody contractors in England and Wales and we require a volunteer, part-time Chair to provide strategic oversight to the organisation. Lay observers operate independently of government and are part of the UK’s national preventive system under the United Nations Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture, (OPCAT).“

Timings: Full Time. However, the role may be reduced to four days per week to maintain research activities.
Remuneration: £130,000 – £145,000 plus performance-related pay opportunities.
