“If you’re running a local political campaign and you’re running ads on television, and you say something wrong about your opponent, guess what? The ad has been pulled,” Saki said. “These platforms live by different rules and people consume more information from them than any other source of media. Think of the dangers of that.”
The House Oversight Committee held a hearing on Twitter’s censorship practices on Wednesday, focusing on the company’s response to the New York Post’s Oct. 14, 2020 report on the contents of Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop. Twitter locked multiple accounts, including the Post and the personal account of then-White House press secretary Kyle McEnany, for sharing the story, citing its “hacked content” policy.
“As Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said, they’re allowing hate speech, racism. Also, let’s not forget the misinformation about vaccines and how they can save your life. They run massively on these platforms,” Saki said.
During the hearing, Rep. Nancy Mays, Republican of South Carolina, described the side effects of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine while questioning former Twitter executives about censorship of alleged “misinformation” about COVID-19.
Among those who were “shadow-banned” by Twitter was Stanford University health policy professor Dr. Joy Bhattacharya, who said that lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic harms children. Dr. Andrew Bostom, a former Brown University academic, was suspended for five months for allegedly providing “medical misinformation.”
“What these Republicans are doing, basically, is to break down all this crazy word salad of yesterday, they’re protecting the pushing of wrong, dangerous information on the platforms that most people get their information from,” continued Psaki. “It’s racist, dangerous, prompting January 6th, encouraging people not to get vaccinated.
